The Promdi wants to ride the waves…

It’s summer once again and I tell you, I am drooling over for a getaway this summer. My circle of friends asked me to join them in one of their adventures this summer, which involves para-sailing. You see, the walking contradiction wants to try different extreme sports this time enabling him to conquer most of his comfort zones and fears. But the sport that I really wanted to try aside from scuba diving, bungee jumping and sky diving is board surfing. Yes I know I am not from Hawaii but haven’t you heard of La Union, Catanduanes, Surigao and Baler where surfing is a popular sport? In case you do not know, there are already many tourists who flock to these Islands for surfing adventures. So what is surfboarding anyway? Surfing or surfboarding is a surface water sport in which the athlete tries to ride along the breaking waves using surfboards.

Actually, there are steps on how you can surf the waters. My friends gave me a crash course on surfing and according to them, the first thing you have to remember is to stay afloat haha. Surfing begins when a surfer tries to scan rideable waves in the horizon and then paddles his way forward by matching the speed of the wave. When the wave starts to carry the surfboard, the rider then stands sturdily on the board, balancing his steps and rides on the board as he is carried by the wave forward. The ability of a newbie surfer is not only measured on his capacity to ride the waves but also his skill in executing certain maneuvers like turning and carving which needed a more extensive training.

There are also things to be considered when surfboarding for instance the type of surfboard to be used. There are different types of surfboards available which depends on the purpose of for its use.

  • Egg Surfboard – is a kind of surfboard that is less than six feet (approximately 1.83 meters long) and has a round tail shape used in smaller waves.
  • Fish Surfboard – this is shorter than the Egg and has a swallowtail shape and a twin fin that is popularly used for smaller waves.
  • Gun Surfboard – ranges from seven to twelve feet in length (approximately 2.13 to 3.66 meters) which has a very thin template and a thruster or Single set up used for big waves.
  • Longboard – is always referred to as the “Mal” which is singled fin and a large rounded nose and measures around nine to twelve feet (approximately 2.74 to 3.66 meters) long. It got its nickname from Malibu where most of the surfers use longboards.
  • Fun Board – referred to as the Mini Mal, which is similar to the long board but is only seven to nine feet (approximately 2.13 to 2.74 meters) long, which can be set up with a three fin “thruster”, or a single fin.
  • Shortboad – the most versatile and most popular among the different shortboards, it has a pointy nose and a smaller dimension that is usually set up with three to five fins.

For me I like to try the feel of foam surfboards because it is more comfortable in my feet and is easy to maneuver. There, I think I am ready to throw myself in the Pacific Ocean to try my surfboarding technique. Wish me luck! I hope I would not drown!
