Arnel Pineda and the power of Filipino Talents

I seldom idolize artists because modesty aside, I have a keen and steep standards when it comes to singers. I’m no Ryan Cayabyab or Gerald Salonga, but I know where the keys should be and when notes go off tangent. Just last Monday I heard about Arnel Pineda, the sensational Barrio Siete/Barangay Dos-Cinderella Story. Among the Pinoy singers that I put in the pedestal of my musical idolatry are the voices behind Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano, Gary Granada, Joey Ayala, Rico J. Puno, and Basil Valdez. These voices are so versatile that even if time has already caused their physical age to change, their voices still stays young, unchanged and undamaged by time. This for me is one of the most important factor of musical success. But among these few artists who I really admire, Arnel Pineda also stands out. Not because of his overnight success but because of his very soothing voice that still keeps the tremolo of alternative rock and eighties’ punk rock. If you are not a fan of the Survivor, America and Chicago, then you cannot appreciate the voice of Arnel Pineda.

I admit, I was really hooked up. His voice remains classical even to this age of cyberspace. It is as if that when he sings, he brings back the glory days of the 80’s in an all new and fresh rendition. I’m an 80’s boy and I am a fanatic of all things 80’s including songs and singers. The Particular song that caught my attention was his rendition of “Ever Since The World Began”. I think I have written three entries already (including this) about Arnel Pineda and I selfdom do this. It’s just that his rendition really struck me to the core because he sang one of my favorite songs with such justice and smoothness regardless of the vocal exertion that the song demands. Whenever I sing this song in Videoke bar, I stiull gasps for air because the notes cannot be justified when you close your vocal cords or else you’ll end up being the pirated version of a slamming door. The singer who will sing this should open up the larynx and pharynx in such a way that when the diaphragm pumps air out of your respiratory track, the two vocal parts should vibrate without any restrictions and resistance in order to get the true quality of the original version. Hence, using falsetto in singing this will just be similar to a multiplex cover rather than doing justice to the song. And as I said earlier, whenever I sing this, I still have difficulty in maintaining the husky bedroom quality that the original song demands, but Arnel Pineda sang this song with ease as if he was just singing in a bathroom. This Arnel Pineda guy who is now the Lead Vocalist of the classic 70’s-80’s band “the Journey” is so into the song that it made me compare the original. You will be surprised of the near similarity of Pineda’s version to that of the original survivor’s. Click the player below and listen to the original version and compare it with Pineda’s version (You need firefox browser in order to hear the songs):

Arnel Pineda’s Version

Survivor’s original version

Ever since the world Began
by The Survivor
Lyrics

I’ll never know what brought me here,
As if somebody led my hand,
It seems I hardly had to steer,
My course was planned.
And destiny it guides us all,
And by its hand we rise and fall,
But only for a moment,
Time enough to catch our breath again.

*and were just another piece of the puzzle,
Just another part of the plan,
How one live touches the other
Is so hard to understand –
Still we walk this road together,
We try and go as far as we can,
And we have waited for this moment in time,
Ever since the world began. *

Taking in the times gone by,
We wonder how it all began,
Well never know and still we
Try to understand,
And even though the seasons change,
The reasons shall remain the same,
Its love that keeps us holding on
Till we can see the sun again.

(*repeat)

Another video of a Pinoy named Super Mike who was featured before in SOP of GMA 7 and is a regular singer at Hard Rock Cafe waiting to be discovered. Watch him sing and Listen to his voice and style, ang galing grabe. Kinikilabutan ako sa galing ng mga Pinoy!!!

Next time, I will blog about why more Filipinos are discovered and given more breaks in foreign shores than in our native land. I will use the best tool of writing in my disposal… that is Ranting

i was at the bar thursday night here in philadelphia with one irish guy and 2 germans. out of the blue, the conversation went to Journey. honestly, i don’t know journey nor i remember them, although when the german guy belted the song, i remember it hahaha. finally, he was the one who said that the new lead singer choses was Filipino named Arnel Pineda. i was really suprised. he said that he’s having a concert in germany this june.

i got home and searched you tube. i found the concert the did in Chile and it was bautiful. the link is on my sidebar.

i honestly could say that his voice is very distinctively beautiful - gosh even to Perry’s! i am sooooo hooked blue, you have no idea, the whole day, I was just listening to him! hahahah

Actually he is more famous than lea salonga now, publicity wise. Alam mo I will soon blog about why Filipinos are given breaks abroad compared here. Tayo kasi dapat nakikinabang sa talento natin pero sa iba napupunta

Camden is in New Jersey by the way, which is directly across the City of Philadelphia and I’ve watched so many singers there already.

LOL

Camden is a rundown city that’s just beginning to have a renaissance. It sits directly across the City of Philadelphia. Many years ago, they cleaned up the city center and opened a big amphitheater for concerts and that’s where we normally watch concerts. My first event there was Elton John and so many more. Camden is on the Jersey side.

Check out Journey’s Home Page and you’ll see all of his schedule there!

I posted a few articles aout Journey and Arnel Pineda but not as extensive as you would normally do in all your posts. :)

I’m hoping that I would get to attend in one of their concerts here in the England.

He’ll do 7 concerts across U and Ireland in just 7 days. C’mon, I think this is ridiculous.

Just hope that he gets enough break after this and a justified pay on what he does.
