Rainy season is already here and it has been raining in our place everyday from late afternoon until morning. The toads and frogs croaking in the pond, the crickets making their noises, ducks wading in the murky waters and people having cups of hot cocoa while they stare at the vast rice field, swamps and meadows being soaked by the rain. I like rainy days. It gives me the sense of security. You know what I’m talking about, when it rains you can’t seem to go out and roam around the city, that’s why you’re stuck in your house, either in front of the TV or just spending time with your family.

Though the best part during rainy season has always been about food (dried fish, mongo soup with misua, tomatoes and salted eggs, smoked fish with coconut fish sauce, nido soup with quail eggs, fried eggplant with egg or just simply longanisang lucban [lucban sausage] with sinangag (garlic rice), ummmm yummy.), yet watching DVD with my favorite pansit canton, chips and a sandwhich while lying lazily on my (I don’t know if it’s king or queen size) bed keeps me really homey. My mom would knock on my door telling me that lunch is served and afterwards I do the dishes while we talk things like the national issues, our dogs, her plants, my dad etc…My dad on the other hand will call me to lend him a hand in everything that he does, from light fixture, antennas, tending his goats to lifting heavy objects.

For snack, my dad would cook Arroz Caldo with all the chicken breast that I could have, sprinkled with spring onions on top or my mom would just wave her magic kutsarol (ladle) and concoct the best tasting hot sopas (macaroni soup) ever.

It is during rainy season that we avoid fast foods because no one is willing to go out and eat or riders are too stuck in the traffic that they cannot anymore bring the fries hot and stiff.

Of course, during rainy season, my dad would take out from his cabinet cans of Pringles chips, particularly the cheese flavor (I like the sour onion better) or this big 1 kilogram bag of pistachio nuts, and we would go to the kitchen or to the living room watching TV and munching everything into oblivion. I know—its all about food. But don’t you think Rainy season brings family closer together?

But kidding aside and setting aside more food talk, doesn’t the rainy season also gives us a foretaste of the Christmas season? With the cool breeze, and everyone wearing their jackets roaming around the city with loved ones tightly hugging them under the umbrella, the weather is saying that Christmas is just 5 months away. And oh yes, the free shower on the streets for those who are too cold to take a bath during the morning before going off to work.

It is also the season when friends come over at our house either for a couple of drinks or for a cup of coffee and update each other with chat or with pranks. I miss those times that we just sit or drink and just talk everything out in the open with no hesitancy and with no pretensions. It is as if every raindrop represents the tears that I have shed in all life’s difficulties and ordeals while journeying with all my friends, may it be mine or theirs.

Indeed rainy season speaks of relationship with friends or family as friends: past and present. How they carried me in their shoulders, how they have guided me in my path and how they journeyed with me along the puddles of human flaws and personality warts.

Some friends are gone, some remained, others betrayed me, while others are still hurting me. But aside from these bitter realities comes the realization that it’s all part of the journey. That friends come and go and that whatever I am today, I owe them some part of my personal history, may they have contributed good or bad to my life.

This rainy season (Philippines to be exact), spare some precious moments pausing and reflecting about your journey with your friends. How you have reached your current status or how they have come with you in your journey. For during rainy season, God reminds us of the blessings of friendships, and how he gave us friends in times of our most gloomy and cloud covered moments, nourishing our weary souls, wounded hearts and exhausted minds, constantly reminding us that we are not alone in our journey…

Just like the rain is sent by the Lord to water the earth and fulfilling the purpose for which it was sent (Isaiah 55:10-11), so does friends come into our life, showering us with love, care and friendship, fulfilling God’s purpose for which they are sent— as a friend. So pick up the phone, click your email account, get your SMS device and express the gratitude you have for them, or else rainy days would be just Mondays that always make you down (that’s from the carpenters by the way).

when i can just stay in the house and need not go anywhere, say work, i love it when it rains. :D

i just dont like heavy downpours because this means floodwaters inside our house… also, i find it soothing to listen to 1728’s “sukob na” during a gentle rain shower.

ah yes, that’s why it’s familiar. TGIF? ah your featured songs in your blog… hindi pa ba TAG-ULAN dyan sa inyo? ang lakas na ng ulan dito sa amin (withheld location).

yun ba yung nasa chapel sila after kinalbo yung apat? tapos natatawa sya? o yung lumabas sya ng kwarto kasama yung aso? hahaha.

tigas ng ulo ni alex noh? si warren medyo malantik at nasa ulap palagi, wala sa realidad. si tokayo Jon eh medyo isip bata. ganun ako dati. like what I said in your post recently, before I offer help and ask for something in return unconsciously. when I’m not appreciated I feel used. Buti na lang naprocess ko yun through the formation in the seminary.

pinakagusto ko dun si will. napaka humble considering na gang member at ex-con sya dati. gusto ko sana ipalabas dito lahat ng episode para mapanood ng marami, ngmalaman nila na tao din ang mga pari at monghe. but i still have to convert it to mpeg and I have to ask the permission of kuya Dom.

Admittedly, I hate RAINS in HK. There’s something about rain that makes my mood swell like a sick puppy. Not that I can’t go out, it’s the gloomy mood of the city.

It’s always a pain to bring an umbrella, I don’t mind getting wet but on the good side, RAINs in the province is a blessing (even fear a typhoon is coming or something pero sanay na kami) it’s a rain that makes you smile when it stops, you’ll see blue skies in the horizons. At syempre masarap kumain ng daing at nakakamay.

It rained this morning and I was feeling okay since siguro naka-relate yung pag uwi ko, I started to put a positive vibes to it. Ika nga kanya-kanyang “weather” lang yan. Besides, masarap pakinggan ang mga kanta ni Sitti Navarro during the quiet evenings when the weather is bad esp during the weekends.

    Happy Weekend, blue.

PS. pag uminit ulet, umakyat ka sa bubung nyo at takpan ang mga butas. hehehe.

did you have worse flood during your time o mas worse ngayon?

It’s good that you were able to go to your friend’s rendezvous.

One time I was on my way home from manila (UST-Espana area), I was stuck at Isetan Recto going to Avenida. It was just a block away but the sudden downpour (less than 10 minutes i guess) flooded the CM Recto that fast. I was stuck there for 30 minutes thinking of whether to brave the floodwaters or wait for it to subside… But it was impossible that the water would subside because of all the trash floating on the streets. so I jumped in the flood and walked my way to the LRT station. Though my pants were stenched with the floodwaters, I have no choice but to ride the LRT because it was the shortest route going to Buendia. I hate rains only when I’m in the Metro–traffic, flood etcetera.

Ganun ba? pero bitin ako brods kasi kulang ka sa exposure mo dun sa DVD. Di pinakita yung pagmamasa mo ng tinapay :) Thanks for the permission. I will have to find a way to convert it to mpeg and upload it on you tube. Maganda yung show makakarealize sa madla na tao rin tayong mga seminarians, monks and priests.

it’s really gloomy when it rains in another land isn’t it K? I hate bringing an umbrella too because I always forget them in the bus. That’s why I bought a folding umbrella that perfectly fits my pouch bag so that I would not forget it.

when you mean sanay, as in no more fears? last year I was all alone in our house when the two superstorms ravaged your province and my province. My mom and dad was in the US and I think i still wrote my account about it here entitled Blue Sky Trilogy. That was really scary since our new house is situated in the middle of a rice field and were elevated 3 feet above the ground. so there was no structure or trees that would buffer the howling winds. I thought our sliding windows would shatter because of the wind force and I would die being pierced by its pieces hehehe (imagination talaga).

hahaha. that was before K in our old house. I’m glad we moved in here two years ago because there’s no more leak on the roof. happy weekend too bro!

Hi bluep! The greatest memories of my childhood as I recall were during the rainy season. The mere mention of the food choices you listed made me hungry (i’m on a diet pa naman!).

Seriously though, I remember one occasion when my sister brought home a stranger, stranded because of the flood caused by a huge storm that went through Manila. She stayed with us overnight, singing with us, telling stories about her family while we tell her about ours. That girl never forgot that rainy night when someone whom she didn’t know, gave her a place to sleep and keep warm. She came by every year to bring us small presents from her province (I forget which one) as a gesture of thanks.

I have come to love rain and the joy it brings me - and the odd thing is, it is raining outside right now! ;) Nice post bluep!

Diet ka pala… hahaha. di bale kaya mo yan, “suportahan taka”

Hehehe. I used to play in the rain with my childhood playmates and my cousins. It was a good feeling having no worries and everything. Just enjoying life’s little pleasures. Its a long time before I played in the rain. when we had our seminary intensification at Rivotorto (The one in my hues menu) the rain poured with all the thunder and lightning.

I asked my superior if I could play in the rain and he gave me permission. for an hour I was running and playing alone in the rice field with all the thunder storm and lightning. my brother seminarians watched me from our tent and was so afraid na I might get struck by lightning. pero it was a great experience to be free once in a while and be a child all over again.

That was nice of you and your sister being good samaritans. don’t you find it strange that life is so mysterious that God seems to arrange for us the people we would meet? That was cool of her to join you in singing all night. Siguro kung ako yun, nandon lang ako sa isang sulok tameme. mahiyain ako sa personal eh.

wow summer rain in New Jersey

    happy weekend!

You know, you are very descriptive in your post here. I think rainy days are good, I guess you learn to like certain things when you don’t have them anymore. Here in the US, we’re at a drought. :???:
